Dustin thought seriously about canceling his second night at the hotel and driving back to Midland or down to Houston, where he could try selling ads. He wasn't getting anywhere sitting in Dallas. He had no urge to go out and party with his buddies again, and since Erica had told him the franchise deal was off, he had no excuse to hang around.

Yet he couldn't seem to leave. He wanted to know what kind of schmuck she was out with tonight. Although he couldn't believe that she'd take the bozo back to her apartment afterward, he wanted to know for sure. Yes, it was juvenile to obsess about it, but he couldn't seem to help himself.

Sitting in his hotel room surfing through channels, eating cheesecake and drinking champagne, he became more fixated on Erica's date by the minute. Damn it, he didn't care what she did tomorrow or the next day, but to go out on a date with another guy hours after having food sex with him was humiliating.

If she took the guy back to her apartment and made out with him, that was even worse. But if they ended up in bed, the same bed Dustin had occupied with her in the wee morning hours, that was beyond terrible. That was atrocious.

If she was that kind of woman, he needed to know. Hell, yes, that was exactly what he needed to know, so that when he went back to Midland he could put Erica Deutchmann right out of his mind. Any woman who could pull a stunt like that wasn't worth losing sleep over.

If he had more time, he could hire Jennifer Madison to investigate, maybe even get some incriminating pictures. But he couldn't expect Jennifer's P.I. firm to swing into action that fast. Not when she had a baby to contend with.

Besides, he'd seen enough movies to know how a stakeout worked. All he had to do was drive over there, find a dark corner of the parking lot, and wait for Erica to come home with the bozo. If she took the guy upstairs, he wouldn't know exactly what was happening, but he could judge by how long the idiot stayed in the apartment. Come to think of it, he could interrogate the creep when he came back out.

Yes, this was sounding like a plan he could live with. He stopped drinking champagne and ordered a pot of coffee. After he drank that, he'd head for her apartment. He'd pick up more coffee on the way, too. One thing he knew for sure, stakeouts always involved lots of coffee.

Fortunately, once Erica explained to her friends that she was afraid Dustin's sexual magnetism would sabotage her goals, they supported her decision to give him a wide berth. All three women laughed their way through the movie and went for coffee and dessert afterward.

Erica couldn't have asked for a better way to distract herself, and she did a convincing job of acting as if Dustin had been banished from her thoughts.
